Difference between viral and bacterial infection

There is a quick way to finding the difference between viral and bacterial infections through an accurate test, according to scientists. Viral infections as well as bacterial infections have similar symptoms but the treatment approach is different. For instance, antibiotics works for bacterial tonsillitis (strep bacteria) but they are useless against viruses.

The journal Analytical Chemistry reports on the importance of finding out the source of an infection to find out the right treatment mode. If it is left untreated, there can be complications, especially in the case of bacterial infections that can grow worse. Giving antibiotics to patients with viral infections is not going to help and it can actually cause problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this case, since the current methods of finding out if the disease is caused due to viral or bacterial infection is difficult, the researchers have developed a test that will help make accurate diagnosis.

This test has found that the immune systems of patients with viral infections behaved differently compared to the immune systems of patients who suffered from bacterial infections. The researchers Robert Marks, Daria Prilutsky, and colleagues have stated that the method is time saving, easily done and can be commercially marketable and can be used in various medical institutions, hospitals and clinics as a cohesive part to clinical decision making.
